Micato Safaris, through its nonprofit arm AmericaShare, has been an advocate of sustainability through education for more than 30 years. Among the initiatives that most directly involves travelers is the Micato One for One Commitment: For every safari sold, the company sends an African child to school.
A staggering 62,000 children in Nairobi’s Mukuru slum, ranging in age from six to sixteen, cannot attend school on a consistent basis because their families are too poor to pay the school fees. The Micato One for One Commitment matches every safari sold with a payment of all fees for a child in need.
The One for One program is managed out of the Micato-AmericaShare Harambee Community Centre in Mukuru, and AmericaShare works closely with the principals of local schools to identify the neediest students whose families cannot afford to keep their children in school. And that’s where Micato takes over. The tour operator has proudly paid school fees for thousands of Mukuru students to attend school on a regular basis, and looks forward to sending thousands more to school in the years to come.
Every child deserves an education. Micato is overjoyed to be contributing to this inalienable right. And by choosing Micato, you create a wonderfully sustainable business of charity. It’s inspiring. Moreover, especially with the holiday season upon us, it’s simply the right thing to do.
