Our very own Kelly Berry had the opportunity to spend a week in Africa hosted by the Ellerman House. Luxuriously chic accommodations and beautiful sea views puts Ellerman House on top of the Cape Town experience. Although, Kelly is no stranger to Africa, this time she got to check a few more sights off of her endless bucket list, including the ‘smoke that thunders,’ which to most is known as the Victoria Falls. We turned to her to get all the exciting details first-hand…
What was the most memorable part of this trip to Africa?
The most memorable part of this trip was finally getting to visit the majestic Victoria Falls. I hate to admit it, but when initially I decided to visit Victoria Falls it was out of a sense of obligation. I looked at Victoria Falls as a ‘bucket list’ item that one had to check-off the list in order to earn their stripes as an Africa junkie. But when I arrived, I was blown away by its magnitude and surroundings. Set amidst the landscape of the African bush, the Zambezi river and its glorious Victoria Falls are so much more than a box to tick. And there is no better way to experience it, than ‘the flight of angels’ which is a helicopter flight that takes you above the thundering falls.
What advice would you give someone who would want to make a similar trip?
Spend two nights in Victoria Falls, and visit the Zimbabwean side. Victoria Falls lies along the border of Zimbabwe & Zambia, but the views from the Zim side are definitely the best!
What sets Ellerman House apart from other luxury hotels in Cape Town?
The intimacy of the property and its unmatched level of service. With only 13 rooms in the main hotel and 90+ staff, when you stay at Ellerman House you become an extended member of the Ellerman House family. They learn exactly how you take your Gin &Tonic’s, and call you by your name, not your room number. They predict and fulfill your every need so that you can truly relax, refresh, and enjoy your time in the Mother City.
What was the best meal you had while visiting Ellerman House?
Too difficult to say! Since I was travelling alone, I ate at Ellerman House almost every night. It was wonderful to come back to the hotel after long days of meetings and just outright indulge in 3-course meals out on the terrace overlooking the south Atlantic. I didn’t skip dessert once! To note was their homemade ice cream. The perfect way to end any dinner for one!
Did you get to experience the wine and/or brandy tasting?
I didn’t do a wine tasting per se, although I did drink plenty of wine! I don’t know much about wine myself so I handed over the reins to Melusi Magodhi, one of Ellerman House’s fabulous sommeliers. He suggested some amazing South African blends – each one outshone the last.
