With a pretty river running through the camp, the sound of birdcalls in the air and hippos wallowing in the water nearby, Zulu Camp in the Shambala Private Game Reserve is a truly dreamy African bush experience.

The luxury camp welcomes guests with its traditional Zulu style, a cozy enclave of honeycomb thatched chalets and an unhurried ambiance. The bush and mountains around the camp are the heart and soul of Shambala and home to the Big Five, which will hopefully be viewed during a stay here. A holistic experience, one replete with luxury and the opportunity for inner reflection, this is the quintessential bush retreat. Zulu Camp is a member of the Saxon Collection, which takes travelers on a unique journey of discovery and exploration of Africa.

Zulu Camp’s eight thatched luxury chalets come with en-suite shower and bath, as well as an outside shower, and provide the magical experience of staying in the heart of the bushveld. Each chalet boasts an elegant Afro-French Provincial style, with fine linens and a French armoire, as well as a private deck overlooking the wonders of the surrounding reserve. Personal butler service attends to each chalet from sunup to sundown.

A thoughtfully tended safari experience, Zulu Camp is centered around its main lodge area with a plunge pool, a dining and lounge area with a welcoming fireplace and a viewing deck over the river for optimal wildlife viewing. WiFi access is available throughout the main lodge area. Each chalet boasts creature comforts ranging from satellite telephone service to a mini bar. Children over the age of 10 are welcome at the camp, making for a more intimate experience for all.

With all of the 10,000-hectare Shambala Private Game Reserve as its personal playground, Zulu Camp can offer countless outdoor activities to its fortunate guests. Take in the reserve on a safari, view wildlife on a morning game drive, savor a leisurely bush picnic or set off on a sundowner cruise. Guided bush walks are always available, as well as conservation-minded volunteer programs. The Shambala Spa is a welcoming space with its secluded setting and treatments based on pure, natural ingredients.

Guests commune with the sublime natural experience around the camp throughout the day, including decadent meals under a thatched-roof lapa and at the central bar in the main lodge, with full river views and a roaring fire in the evening. The cuisine is distinctively South African, with the chef preparing a braai some evenings at the main fire area – similar to a traditional barbecue with meats cooked over an open flame. Hearty, plated meals are also readily available.

Zulu Camp is located in the malaria-free Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province in the Shambala Private Game Reserve. The camp is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg and O. R. Tambo International Airport.
