The magnificent Virunga Lodge, perched high on a ridge, is the premier luxury destination for Rwanda wildlife safaris and tracking the endangered mountain gorillas.

The organic, “bush-chic” design reflects the local building style and offers luxury comforts to all guests. Each of the ten stone bandas has its own terrace with breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes or twin lakes, while sensitive installations such as low-flush toilets and solar power ensure you enjoy luxurious comforts while maintaining a crucial sensitivity to the environment. Two deluxe bandas provide the perfect romantic retreat for honeymooners or for those looking for something extra special. Each deluxe banda is complete with its own fireplace, a private sitting room with a spare day bed for families with little children, and a modern bathroom.

Journey into the misty forests of Africa and enjoy privileged insights into the fascinating world of the great apes with Volcanoes Safaris. Specializing in mountain gorilla and chimpanzee safaris in Uganda and Rwanda, this award-winning pioneer in ecotourism ensures that safaris respect the culture of local communities, the fragility of the environment and the need to use resources in a sustainable way. Led by outstanding guides and staying at intimate lodges near the gorilla and chimpanzee parks, guests are assured a truly unforgettable experience with Volcanoes Safaris.

Each of Virunga Lodge’s ten stone guest bandas (cottages) is named after a lake in the area and offers a welcome respite after a day spent tracking the endangered mountain gorilla. The bandas are equipped with smartly placed private terraces to allow for spellbinding sunrise views and are outfitted in vibrant Rwandese fabrics, locally inspired furnishings, a fireplace, a luxury shower room and more (the very refined Deluxe Bandas, Ibirunga and Ibiyaga, come with a private sitting room).

From a complimentary massage for each guest to butler service in every banda, Virunga Lodge’s amenities have been carefully curated to ensure a relaxed, yet decadent stay. Thoughtful details include complimentary laundry and boot-cleaning service, WiFi access in the main lodge building and Dian Fossey Map Room, and premium wine, whiskey and cocktail menus. An expertly trained staff provides fantastic food and exceptional, personalized service.

Guests at Virunga are there with a similar purpose – to track the extraordinary mountain gorillas that call this volcanic landscape home. Easy, medium and difficult treks are available, ranging from 30 minutes to three or four hours. Additional activites include golden monkey tracking, hiking to Dian Fossey’s gravesite, hiking Karisimbi and Visoke Volcanoes, visiting Lake Kivu and Gisenyi, visiting the Roz Carr Orphanage, watching an Intore dance performance and touring the Mwiko Primary School.

Guests gather at a candle-lit, communal dining table each evening to recount their day’s adventures and share thoughtfully conceived, locally inspired dishes, complemented by fine wine, beer and spirits from around the world. Dinnertime at Virunga brings with it the chance to overlook the sweeping vista of volcanoes in the distance.

Virunga Lodge is located between Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo in Rwanda, a 20-minute helicopter transfer from Kigali International Airport or a three-hour drive. The lodge is a two and a half hour drive from Mount Gahinga Lodge, a two-hour drive from Kisoro Airstrip. Travel times are approximate.
