Nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, Mount Gahinga Lodge boasts the impressive backdrop of three of the volcanoes themselves.

Its rustic charm creates an absorbing atmosphere of tranquility. The main building features a cozy living space with a warm central fire, offering the ideal environment for relaxing at the end of the day. An outside terrace and a spacious sun room adjoining the living area complete the peaceful and open style. Six stone guest bandas have been thoroughly renovated to offer unparalleled luxury in the region. Each room has a fireplace and an en-suite bathroom and each is reached by taking a short stroll through the large gardens that fill the lodge with life.

Journey into the misty forests of Africa and enjoy privileged insights into the fascinating world of the great apes with Volcanoes Safaris. Specializing in mountain gorilla and chimpanzee safaris in Uganda and Rwanda, this award-winning pioneer in ecotourism ensures that safaris respect the culture of local communities, the fragility of the environment and the need to use resources in a sustainable way. Led by outstanding guides and staying at intimate lodges near the gorilla and chimpanzee parks, guests are assured a truly unforgettable experience with Volcanoes Safaris.

Six stone guest bandas, each with a locally inspired papyrus roof and named after a Virunga Volcano, are nestled about the main lodge, each with an en-suite luxury shower room, fireplace and private porch overlooking the misty volcanoes. Solar-heated hot and cold running water, power sockets and charging facilities are available in the lodge’s main living room.

Guests are invited to gather in the main lodge’s beautiful living room, sun room or terrace, with breathtaking vistas of the volcanoes and the Kisoro Valley. WiFi and charging stations are available here. There is also a fully stocked gift shop, a quiet spa room where guests receive one complimentary massage each and free laundry service.

Activities at Gahinga Lodge focus on the area’s wildlife, making this the perfect base for gorilla and rare golden monkey tracking. There are ample opportunities for outdoor exploration, including climbing one of the volcanoes (including Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhavura), walking through local villages and sharing in the culture of the Batwa pygmies, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rainforest. Guests are invited to visit the Batwa Vocational Centre and visit the new Batwa settlement nearby.

Guests gather at a candle-lit, communal dining table each evening to recount their day’s adventures and share thoughtfully conceived, locally inspired dishes, complemented by fine wine, beer and spirits from around the world. Mealtime (or sundowner time) at Mount Gahinga Lodge brings with it the chance to overlook the Virunga Volcanoes and the Kisoro Valley below.

Mount Gahinga Lodge is a one-hour flight from Entebbe International Airport; a five-hour drive from Kigali, Rwanda; a two and a half hour drive from Virunga Lodge; a 15-minute flight from Bwindi Lodge; and a one-hour drive from Kisoro Airstrip. Travel times are approximate.
