With a history deeply intertwined with that of South Africa, the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa merges the country’s finest culinary experiences with an unmatched level of luxury.
From the grand sweeping staircase to the quiet garden villas, from the exceptional wine cellars to the remarkable infinity swimming pool, every detail has been carefully considered here to create the ultimate getaway. With origins as a private home – and home to Nelson Mandela while he completed his autobiography – today’s visitors can expect only the best in hospitality, warmth and service. Crafted as a home away from home, the Saxon’s exclusivity and privacy make it a most appealing retreat for the world’s savviest travelers. The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa is a member of the Saxon Collection of properties, which take travelers on a unique journey of discovery and exploration of Africa.
Guests of the Saxon have a choice of elegant suites in the main house, or private garden villas. The suites place guests within easy reach of the dining area, main pool and Saxon Spa and offer a variety of amenities, from king-size four-poster beds to Jacuzzi baths. The larger villas range in size and service, including a dining area for up to 18 guests, 24-hour butler service, chef service and plunge pools. The two largest villas have a private spa suite. Of course, villa guests have complete access to the hotel’s facilities.
Aiming to be an extension of a guest’s own home, The Saxon has created a retreat with a personal touch, from efficient, yet unhurried butler service to personalized experiences, including shopping and city tours and wine tastings. Every detail is attended to, from personalized wake-up calls to evening turndown, planning of special occasions to holistic spa treatments at the spa. The hotel also prides itself on its collection of African art, from sketches and woodcuts to mixed-media pieces from the country’s most celebrated artists.
Myriad activities – from the restful and rejuvenating to cultural and cosmopolitan – await Saxon guests. Many find respite at the Saxon Spa and Studio, a secluded haven offering ancient and modern healing techniques and aromatherapy from around the globe. City tours are available, introducing the museums, art galleries and crafts markets of Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria. Later, high tea awaits in the Piano Lounge, a much-needed break over treats and perfectly infused tea in the Piano Lounge.
The true headliner at The Saxon is the dining hour, when the choice must be made between the innovative Qunu Restaurant with its fine South African cuts of meat, fresh fish and handpicked local ingredients, and Luke Dale Roberts X Saxon, a synergy of food, wine and art. The Eighteen05 Bar, named in honor of Johnnie Walker, serves a limited edition whisky, while deep in the heart of the Saxon, lie the Wine Cellars, a collection of the most esteemed South African wines and classic vintages from around the world.
Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa is located in the quiet Sandhurst neighborhood of Johannesburg. The O. R. Tambo International Airport is a 45-minute drive away.
