BoB

Since 1999, Balloons Over Bagan has lifted the spirits – quite literally – of hundreds of fortunate and adventurous world travelers, and in 2014 were named by Travel & Leisure as the purveyor of the “World’s Best Balloon Rides.”

Founders Brett Melzer and Khin Omar Win provide a unique bird’s eye view of the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River, ancient temples and archaeological treasures dotted amongst fields of palm trees, that bring to light the Bagan of a thousand years ago, when it was an ancient capital city in the Kingdom of Pagan.

Amenities

From coffee and cookies at the balloon launch site, as the sunrise casts a dreamy light across the Bagan landscape, to highly qualified – and charmingly friendly – commercial hot-air balloon pilots, to a team of skilled workers who inflate and prepare the balloons for launch, every detail is attended to with expert precision. Each balloon holds either 8 or 16 passengers, all of whom are briefed with safety information before lift off and a peaceful flight of 45 minutes to an hour. Each pilot also acts as an expert tour guide once aloft, pointing out the temples, stupas and medieval monuments that dot the landscape below. Back on the ground, croissants and champagne await, the perfect topper to a true bucket-list achievement.

Activities

Those who take to the skies with Balloons Over Bagan are in for dreamlike moments as they glide in pristine silence above centuries-old temples and catch glimpses of the vast Ayeyarwaddy River. Beyond ballooning, guests are invited to check out the local lacquerware industry, producers of beautiful vases, bowls and tableware. Sunset cruises visit remote sandbanks and horse-cart rides along dusty tracks lead to some of Bagan’s more isolated, and equally intriguing, temples and villages.

Balloons Safari

Guests seeking an even more exclusive experience may consider a private safari over and around Inle Lake, with a balloon flight over a different area each morning. Inle Lake, Mynamar’s second-largest lake, is home to 70,000 Intha people, who reside in stilt houses in lakeshore villages and spend their days famously catching fish using the traditional one-leg rowing technique. From lofty heights, their homes and gardens appear to float serenely on the lake below. Overnight in a traditional village house owned by the Headman from the Danu Tribe, before waking to another spectacular flight over the Shan Hills.
